Wholesale Embroidery Myths That Hold Decorators Back
If you run a screen printing business, a promotional products company, or a smaller embroidery operation, you have probably weighed up whether to send some of your embroidery work to a wholesale partner rather than doing it all in house. It is a sensible question to ask, but it is also one surrounded by a surprising amount of misinformation. We have been doing wholesale embroidery for other decorators for a long time, and we hear the same worries over and over. So let us clear a few things up.
Doree has been the home of quality embellishment since 1934, and a good portion of what leaves our Brisbane workshop is stitched on behalf of other businesses under their own branding, with complete confidentiality. If any of the following myths have been putting you off exploring wholesale embroidery, it is worth reading on before you rule it out.
Myth 1: Outsourcing means losing your client relationship
This is the myth we hear most often, and it is simply not how a proper wholesale arrangement works. When a promotional company or fellow decorator sends work our way, it goes out under their name, their invoice and their brand relationship. Your client never needs to know who physically stitched the job. We treat every wholesale enquiry with the same discretion we would want if the roles were reversed, and confidentiality is built into how we operate, not something you have to negotiate for.
Myth 2: Wholesale work means lower quality or generic results
There is an assumption that outsourced production is somehow a step down from in house work. In reality, quality often comes down to equipment, thread and process, not who owns the embroidery machine. We run our own embroidery services with an in house digitising and art department, which means designs are prepared and colour matched properly before a single stitch goes down. We use high quality rayon thread for corporate work and durable polyester thread for workwear, and uniform embroidery is done with material backing and double stitched, so it resists puckering and running through heavy commercial washing. That level of care applies whether the job is for our direct customer or for a decorator further down the supply chain.
Myth 3: You need huge volume for it to be worth it
Some decorators assume a wholesale partner only wants enormous runs and will not bother with smaller jobs. That is not the case here. With around 150 embroidery heads on site, we can produce any quantity of badges or embroidered garments, from just a handful up to tens of thousands, and badge orders are typically dispatched within five to seven working days. That flexibility is exactly what makes wholesale embroidery useful for smaller decorators, because you can take on a client’s odd one off order or a modest top up run without tying up your own machines for a job that barely covers its cost.
Myth 4: Turnaround will blow out your deadlines
It is a fair concern. If you are promising a client a delivery date, the last thing you want is a partner who cannot keep pace. The reason our volume pricing and turnaround work for other decorators is precisely because of our capacity. High volume production capability lets us offer national service from Brisbane with fast turnaround and competitive pricing, rather than the reverse. Decorators send us overflow work during busy periods, seasonal spikes, or jobs outside their own equipment’s capability, and it slots into a production line built for exactly that kind of demand.
Myth 5: Complex jobs are too risky to send elsewhere
Plenty of decorators stick to straightforward flat embroidery in house and assume anything more specialised has to be handled internally or not at all. But a wholesale partner with the right range removes that limitation rather than adding to it. Alongside standard 2D embroidery, we also produce 3D embroidery, embroidered badges and patches, epaulettes, hat bands and full uniform embroidery, plus screen printing, heat seal and vinyl heat transfer, and DTF printing. Caps in particular are a good example of where things get technical fast, since we can embroider front, back, side or right around 270 degrees of the front panel. Sending that kind of job to a specialist wholesale embroiderer often produces a better result than attempting it on equipment not built for the job.
Common mistakes to avoid when choosing a wholesale partner
If you do decide to explore wholesale embroidery, a few practical checks will save you headaches later.
- Not asking how designs are digitised. Ask whether digitising is done in house or sent offshore, and how revisions and colour matching are handled before production starts.
- Not confirming thread and backing quality. For workwear and uniforms in particular, ask about thread type and whether backing and double stitching are standard, not an optional extra.
- Assuming confidentiality without asking. A reputable wholesale embroiderer should be upfront about how your client relationships are protected.
- Ignoring minimum order requirements. Some wholesale providers only want bulk runs. Confirm they can genuinely handle both small and large jobs before you rely on them for either.
- Overlooking turnaround transparency. Get a realistic dispatch timeframe in writing, especially during busy periods like back to school or end of financial year uniform orders.
