Badge or Patch: What Is the Difference?

In everyday use, the terms are often swapped around, and honestly the industry is not fussy about it either. Generally, a “badge” refers to a smaller emblem, often used on a chest, cap or lapel, while a “patch” tends to describe a larger design, sometimes for the back of a jacket or a shoulder sleeve. Both are made the same way: your artwork is digitised into a stitch file, then embroidered onto a backing fabric before being trimmed to shape.

Getting the Artwork Right From the Start

Every badge starts as a digital embroidery file, not the logo you send us in a PDF or JPEG. This is where an in house digitising and art department earns its keep. A skilled digitiser will simplify fine detail, choose the right stitch types for small text and fill areas, and colour match your thread to your brand palette, all before a single stitch is sewn. Fine print, thin outlines and gradients that look fine on screen often do not translate well to thread, so it pays to have someone experienced flag those issues early rather than discover them on a finished sample.

If you are unsure whether your logo will work as a small badge, ask for a digitised proof before production begins. It costs you nothing to check and saves everyone a reorder.

Choosing a Backing and Attachment Method

How your badge attaches to a garment matters just as much as how it looks. The common options are:

• Sew on: the most durable and traditional option, ideal for uniforms, school blazers and workwear that goes through heavy laundering.
• Iron on (heat seal backing): quick to apply with a heat press, suited to lower volume runs or items that will not be washed as often.
• Hook and loop (velcro): popular for hi vis workwear, emergency services and uniforms where badges need to be swapped or removed regularly.
• Self adhesive or pin backing: handy for events, name badges and short term promotional use.

If your badges are going onto garments that will be commercially laundered, sew on with a hook and loop backer is usually the sturdiest combination, since it survives repeated washing far better than adhesives.

Border and Edge Finishes

The edge of a badge is not just decorative, it protects the stitching underneath from fraying. Two common finishes are:

• Merrowed border: a thick, rounded satin stitch wrapped around the edge, traditionally used on round or oval badges. It gives a slightly raised, classic look.
• Hot cut or laser cut border: the badge is embroidered then trimmed with a heated blade that seals the edge as it cuts. This suits irregular shapes, letters, and badges that need to follow a custom outline.

Your shape and design will usually determine which border makes sense. A simple circle or shield often looks best merrowed, while a logo shaped badge or lettering usually needs a hot cut finish.

Size and Detail Limits

As a rule of thumb, keep text at least four to five millimetres tall so it stays legible once stitched, and avoid cramming too many colours into a very small badge. Fine details like thin serif fonts or intricate line art tend to fill in or lose definition below a certain size. If your logo has a lot of detail, we can suggest a slightly larger badge size or a simplified version specifically for small applications like cap fronts or lapels.

Thread Choice and Durability

We use high quality rayon thread for corporate badges where colour vibrancy and sheen matter, and durable polyester thread for workwear and uniform badges that need to withstand heavy commercial washing without puckering or running. For uniform work, we also back badges with a material backing and double stitch them into place, which adds real durability for garments that are worn and washed constantly, whether that is a school uniform, a trade shirt or hi vis gear.
